Godly Play
In our Christian Formation classes for children we use “Godly Play,” a Montessori-based program created by Jerome Berryman, an Episcopal priest. The classes are open to four-year-olds through fifth-graders and meet 9:30 to 10:15 AM on Sunday mornings.
Godly Play is built on the premise that all children are born with spirituality and just need the words to express it. It’s a creative and imaginative way of presenting the sacred stories of the Bible. Using small figures, the storyteller presents the story on the floor in front of the children, who gather in a circle.
Next is a time of wondering about the story, as children are allowed to discover who God is and experience the mystery. Then the children respond to the story either by using art materials or working with the story materials themselves. And finally everyone comes back together into the circle for a time of fellowship and to share in the feast. All are welcome!
